About Brian McNaughton

 

Brian McNaughton is an educator and scientific professional based in Phoenixville, PA. McNaughton has several specializations, including biologics drug discovery, evaluation of therapeutic leads, and large molecule pharmaceutical science. These skills enable Brian to push his passion for therapeutic discovery and care. 

More specifically, Brian McNaughton specializes in protein evolution, intracellular biologics delivery, nanobody-based immunotherapeutic discovery, RNA-targeted protein and peptide drug discovery, and more. In addition to having an expert understanding of these subjects, he is a mentor and educator, helping future generations further the field. 

One of Brian McNaughton’s most significant goals in life is to help create the next generation of therapeutics. As such, he has been at the forefront of research and development. His work has helped him earn an NIH Research Grant, which will be used to develop novel protein/RNA interactions and more. McNaughton hopes to use this current opportunity to help expand therapeutic utility and understanding. In fact, this now makes four research projects that McNaughton is actively pursuing. This is not the first grant McNaughton has received; given his hard work and dedication, it will not be the last. For example, in 2021, McNaughton completed a research project on “SARS-CoV-2 Entry Inhibitors as Therapeutics and Prophylaxis.”

Currently, Brian McNaughton is working as a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor. Some of his classes include Modern Organic Chemistry, Physical Organic Chemistry, Immunology, and Molecular Biology. Prior to this role, McNaughton was an Associate Professor of Chemistry (primary) and Biochemistry/Molecular Biology (secondary) at Colorado State University (2009-2018). Before that, Brian was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. During McNaughton’s Postdoctoral years, he helped publish twelve different research papers.

Brian McNaughton earned his Bachelor of Science at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2000). His BS is in Chemistry, creating the foundation for his career. In 2002, Brian headed back to school, this time for his Doctorate. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy and Chemistry (Chemical Biology) from the University of Rochester. 

Over the years, Brian McNaughton has published several research papers, including “An Evolved RNA Recognition Motif That Suppresses HIV-1 Tat/TAR-Dependent Transcription,” “Resurfaced Shape Complementary Proteins That Selectively Bind the Oncoprotein Gankyrin,” and “Synthetic RNA Recognition Motifs That Selectively Recognize HIV-1 Trans-Activation Response Element Hairpin RNA.” He has also researched (and explained) antibodies and mimetics in other papers and helped medical professionals understand how his research may relate to cancer treatment options.

Outside of work, Brian McNaughton has many hobbies and passions. He loves golf, hiking, and other physical activities that get him outdoors. Additionally, he cherishes time spent with his children, family, and friends. McNaughton enjoys traveling and seeing the world for himself, especially as it enables new opportunities to try different foods. Ideally, he would like to share as much of this world as possible with his children. Finally, Brian is a passionate painter. He loves the vibrant world of colors and canvases and the ability to express oneself through a myriad of mediums and forms.
